I’ve watched a handful of episodes now from Dark Matter and I really enjoy it. It has the bisexual doctor from Lost Girl playing an adorable android. The premise of the story reminds me of other shows like Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda, Farscape, Blake’s 7, and Firefly. Six people wake up on a spaceship with no memories of who they are, and the story involves the mystery of who they were and what they’re going to do now.
It turns out that five of them are wanted criminals on the Space FBI’s Most Wanted List. The sixth, so far, turned out to be a kind of Dickensian street urchin who happens to be a engineering genius. The leader is Two, who is a woman who may not be human. My favorite character is Four, who might be “problematic” in the sense that he plays a Space Japanese warrior who is obsessed with honor, stoicism, and swords. He also comes from Space Japan.
Everyone else is pretty interesting. Three is an unapologetic asshole, but after a while he started to grow on me because he was always honest, but stupid sometimes. Five is a pretty cool pilot who has been set up to be a terrorist. One is just kind of a moron who isn’t who he thought he was.
It’s an interesting show. Sort of like Lost Girl, they do try to explore themes of sexuality and empowerment, with varying degrees of success. I like the set design and I’m interested in the story, so I’m going to keep at at it for now.
